Where can I find training opportunities and/or learning and teaching materials on the topic of RDM?

The topic of research data management (RDM) is diverse. For those looking for general (generic) information, we have compiled a list of helpful resources here. Subject-specific information on RDM in agrosystem research can be found directly here in our Knowledge Base.

Many aspects of RDM can be easily learned independently. In addition to the above-mentioned information resources, there are also learning materials for self-study and teaching resources for the further training others. There is also the option of participating in training sessions in the field of RDM.

Training opportunities

FAIRagro organises various trainings (some in collaboration with different partners). An overview of upcoming training events - both our own and other relevant courses - can be found in the training calendar on the FAIRagro website.

If you have any questions about training, please take a look at the Trainig & Education section on our website or get in contact with our training coordinator or the helpdesk.

Training: From Field Data to FAIR Data: How to Manage Your Agrosystem Research Data (Recording)

In April 2026, as part of our FAIRagro FDM training programme, we conducted and recorded a 4-hour online training session (in English). The video and accompanying materials have been published under the title “From Field Data to FAIR Data: How to Manage Your Agrosystem Research Data - Trainingmaterial1.

Modular Training Material

As part of the FAIRagro project, a detailed modular training material2 on RDM in agrosystem research was developed and published. This training module contains the slides and content used in our training courses and is designed for reuse (especially by teachers). The slides and content are in English. The 4-hour online training course „From Field Data to FAIR Data: How to Manage Your Agrosystem Research Data1 (see above) is included in the training module as a training example.

You can find a handbook on how to use this modular training material, as well as guidance on creating your own FDM training, here in our Knowledge Base soon.

Collection of learning and teaching materials

Collection of learning and teaching materials

Boße et al. (2024): How to Learn and Teach Research Data Management in Agrosystem Research - a FAIRagro Collection

There is a wide range of learning and teaching materials available (especially online). To make it easier to find your way around, we have compiled a collection of learning and teaching materials on handling research data3 for the agrosystem research community. These resources are intended to support further education in the field of RDM, especially in agricultural sciences. Teachers can reuse many of the collected resources to design their own training courses on discipline-specific RDM.

This collection (in the form of an Excel table) contains detailed descriptions of the resources, information on learning objectives, target groups, authors and sponsors. The table allows you to filter by resources that are particularly suitable for self-study, for example, or by materials that can be reused by teachers. Other criteria such as language, format, target group, domain and licence can also be filtered specifically.

Cooperation with the University of Kassel

At the end of 2024/beginning of 2025, FAIRagro collaborated with the University of Kassel to design and implement a three-part training course on “Research Data Management in Agricultural Sciences”. In addition to a general introduction, advanced training courses were offered on the topics of “data documentation” and “data publication”. The materials are published here:

As part of the Legal Workshop Series “Don't panic! Survival guide for Law and Ethics in Research”, organised by FAIRagro, NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4Earth, the first episode “Data protection on a silver platter” (“Datenschutz auf dem Silbertablett”, German only) was conducted in April 2025 by Lea Singson and Sophie Boße. The materials, incl. the recording, are published (German only):}

The next episode produced by FAIRagro is entitled “The licence to research: Who owns research data and what am I allowed to do with it?” (“Die Lizenz zum Forschen: Wem gehören Forschungsdaten und was darf ich damit tun?”, German only). It was also conducted by Lea Singson and Sophie Boße in March 2026. The materials, including the recording, have also been published (German only):

The third episode organised by FAIRagro will take place in October 2026. This time, the subject of “data protection” will be covered in English: “Data protection on a silver platter”.

You can find further information about the Legal Workshop Series, including details of upcoming episodes, on our FAIRagro website.

Cooperation with NFDI4BIOIMAGE

In November 2025, two of the FAIRagro Data Stewards, together with colleagues from NFDI4BIOIMAGE, held a three-part training workshop on “Image Data Management in the Biological Sciences and Agricultural Research” at the University of Kassel. After a joint introduction to the topic, the group was divided into two groups for modules 2 and 3, focusing on microscopy and agricultural sciences. The two FAIRagro modules dealt with “Observation data: From ground robots to UAVs” and “Satellite and grid data: the view from above”. All materials from the entire workshop are published on Zenodo:
