How are the FAIRagro training materials structured?

All FAIRagro training materials can be reused. To this purpose, they have been formatted in a modular way for reuse and published under an open license.

Inspired by the EduBrick concept (cf. Brilhaus et al., 2023)1, the materials were provided in their smallest didactic units - known as “Bricks” - to enable the creation of customized training materials tailored to specific formats and target audiences.

Each brick can be identified by an ID and is assigned to a topic and, if applicable, a subtopic. All metadata for the individual bricks - such as learning objectives, content, and estimated teaching time - is compiled at the topic level in teaching scripts and linked via the ID to the corresponding presentation slides, including lecture notes and worksheets.

What is a learning objective?

“A learning objective describes the verifiable increase in knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to a specific learning content” (translated from Stangl, n.d.)2, which is to be achieved at the end of a learning process (cf. Gundermann, 2024)3.

The learning objectives of the FAIRagro training materials were partially adopted or adapted from the RDM learning objective matrix by Petersen et al. (2025)4.

The materials are available in various formats. So first decide whether you want to work with Microsoft Office or LibreOffice, and download the corresponding ZIP file. Then you can unzip the files.

The materials are also available as PDF files. However, they are of limited use for reuse as they cannot be modified.

After unpacking the files, you will find a folder structure in which the individual “Bricks” - the smallest didactic units - are organized by topic. The teaching scripts, which contain the didactic information linked to the Bricks via their IDs, are integrated into the folder structure at the topic level.

Git repository containing LibreOffice files

To make it easier to use our modular training materials, we have also made all the bricks available in a Git repository, where you can always find the latest version of our materials.

The meta information for each brick is directly accessible in md files and can be linked to the corresponding presentation slides (odp) and worksheets (odt) in the folder structure using the ID.

Please note that the Git repository is still under construction and only LibreOffice files are available there. If you would like to use the materials as PDF or Microsoft Office files, they are available in our publication on Zenodo and in the publisso FRL.
